Epic Room Makeover Unveiling!

By Mandi 07/07/2011

What a busy busy week. For those of you who started reading Vintage Revivals since the Epic Room Makeover announcement lets do a quick recap.

I came up with the idea to have a giveaway contest sponsored by products that I truly love and go to someones house (anywhere in the US) for a free room makeover. Vintage Revivals style.

Giveaway Button

After 3 rounds of elimination the winner was Jessica Rowan. The funny thing is that she lives about 20 minutes from where my parents live in Salt Lake. Crazy right?

This is the room that Jessica submitted.

Her cluttery, not awesome in the least master bedroom.

And this is what it looks like now.

Final ERM 4 243

The biggest complaint that she had was with her closet doors. There were none.

So in all manner of epicness I created this freakishly awesome solution.

See this wall of board and batten?

ERM 4 052

Wellโ€ฆ its sort of magic.

ERM 4 167

Both sides slide open. Sweet right? This is probably one of my most favorite projects ever and the best part is that it was made using inexpensive things that you can find at any Home Depot.

This corner was super crowded with an armoire before:

And after:

Final ERM 4 065

Are you DYING over that stencil? It is Endless Moorish Circles from Royal Design Studio. Amazing right?

And the paint colors are PERFECT. The gray is Empire State and the white is Ultra White both from Dutch Boy. If you are looking for the perfect gray I would bet my first born that you will love this one.

ERM 4 066

Recognize that cute chair?

ERM 4 224

Final ERM 4 055

I totally stole the board and batten pattern from one of my BBFFโ€™s Emily @ Dรฉcor Chick. Love that girl.

The chandy started out like this:

Epric Room Makover Days 1-3 007

I used hanging garden baskets to make the cage around it and spray painted it with Krylonโ€™s Metallic Brass.

Epric Room Makover Days 1-3 009

I wish I could say that I came up with this BRILLIANT idea on my own but alas I stole it from the amazing Shannon at Anythingology.

ERM 4 135

ERM 4 139

Do you remember the post I did about the perfect dresser that got away?

Well Jessica had one just like it except it was red. Its sort of the Makeover Miracle.

It got a coat of Krylon Sun Yellow (which is the most perfect yellow on the planet.) And its better than the one that got away. Boom.

ERM 4 081

The headboard was an old door that Jessica had.

We chopped off about a foot and 1/2 and added crown molding and painted it with Krylon Emerald Green. The panels inside are covered with Ikea fabric and I put nailhead trim along the insides.

ERM 4 096

ERM 4 098

Hmmm lets see what else was there?

Oh yes the Roman Numeral art. MMVI stands for 2006 which is the year Jessica and her husband Allan were married.

I used a few different colors of watered down Decoart and my Purdy brush to get this weathered finish. I wanted it to look a little more rough than mine.

ERM 4 141

ERM 4 144

The Ikea rug had a really simple update with Americana acrylic paint. Which has a super bright concentrated color, ideal for something like this rug.

ERM 4 193

Now donโ€™t get all crazy when I tell you this but all of the glazing was done with Decoartโ€™s Antiquing Mediumโ€ฆnot RL faux glaze. There was just a little bit on the mirror, headboard, and on the end table. I love that you can custom mix the perfect amount with is. It was also a lot thicker than RLโ€™s which I loved.

ERM 4 108

If you are a newbie glazer give this a try. $3.00 is not as big of a commitment as $20 for a pint of regular glaze.

Also thanks to Purdy I am not against cutting in anymore!! Holla my hubs is going to be so happy!! Now I might actually go and finish the trim in Dylanโ€™s roomโ€ฆ

ERM 4 229

Here are a few more token shots.

Second I need to thank my wonderful friends who helped me SOOO much. You know how they say you should have a doctor and a lawyer etc in your circle? Well for a DIYer itโ€™s a little different.

Amy @ Ameroonie Designs is my resident mathmetician. I told her what I wanted the board and batten to look like and she told me how many boards, what distance apart, you know all the hard mathy stuff.

Tam @ Sew Dang Cute let me adopt her Silhouette a few times so I didnโ€™t have to bring mine up. Even super late on Sunday night we got to hang while it was doing its magic. And she just had her baby 12 hours ago so she deserves a plate of cookies x 3.

Mandi @ Tidbits from the Tremaynes is just one of the most amazing people I have ever made friends with. On top of helping us cut the crown molding for the headboard she was my rock and voice of reason through all of this. I knew that regardless of my question she could help me figure out the answer.

And so so many others that came and helped paint and install and problem solve!

Stay tuned cause I am taking you guys on a field trip to an upholstery workshop soonโ€ฆ

Tutorials for all of these projects will be posted over the next few weeks. If you have any questions you can either email me or leave it in the comments (just make sure you have your email linked to your profile so I can respond)

This contest has been a crazy fun ride, it pushed me harder than I have ever been pushed. I learned a lot about myself and I cant wait to meet more of you in the next round!!

  1. i’m so sad. For some reason I can’t see any of the after pictures… only the befores. I’ll have to fix whatever the problem is, asap!

  2. What a great upgrade! Love all the techniques and details, and that little pillow tucked under the nightstand is lovely!

  3. Mandi,
Every single thing in this room is amazing! You must have worked soooo hard on it! I love the closet doors, haven’t seen b&b done on that before! Great thinking! Secondly, where did you get that gorgeous bed spread? I love it and want one just like it!
    Beautiful job Mandi!
    Susan @ homeroad

  4. Ummm… so yeah, super huge applause, standing ovation style! L.O.V.E. it. That was amazing. Thanks for the inspiration, I hope there will be some tutorials!

  5. That looks great! It’s fun and a great mix of feminine and masculine. I think my favorite thing is the closet doors because it’s so clever and practical. I looked at the before pic and thought “did you have to cut out the middle portion of wall?” but then saw that you avoided that by simply putting the railing in front. Brilliant!

  6. You are so inspiring! You make me look at stuff on a whole new level. I have an idea for you. What if you decorate a room in a rental? Something that structurally can’t be altered or tweaked much? I’d love to see what clever things you come up with.

  7. You’re pretty much a rock star!! Dang girl. You were busy. EVERYTHING turned out freakishly awesome but the board and batten, for me, takes it over the top. In.credible job.

  8. Holy, ever-lovin’ make-over! Stunning, just stunning. You have a very long and successful career ahead of you. Congratulations on a beautiful job

  9. I love it! I’m a huge fan of board and batten, it just makes everything have so much character, and I like that you did it over the closet, that was a really good idea. My other fav thing is probably the headboard and that miracle of a chair you made! Just fabulous!! Congrats.

  10. You did such a great job! You should really be proud of yourself! Your talents never cease to amaze me! What a beautiful room! I love the board and batten doors! I think we might need a tutorial on that!

  11. That room is the single most AWESOME room makeover I have seen! My jaw just kept dropping lower and lower. I want to go start on my Master bedroom NOW!!!
    Except wait, I’m not you…shoot!
    Deb

  12. I’ll buy you a ticket if you’ll come do me next. ๐Ÿ™‚ Wow! It looks like it is out of a magazine and I love the touch of whimsy with the his and hers lamps. Fan-Freaking-Tastic!

  13. Jessica! Your room is wow. Mandi – as always, you don’t disappoint ๐Ÿ™‚ I love the colour scheme. It’s fun and not contrived or hard to live in. It’s bright and funny, kinda like your contest winner!

Kudos to your sponsors. They obviously made it happen for you and all your blogging lovelies who came out of the *woodwork* to help, style, build and plan for you.

Amazing initiative taken to get this underway and done. Gorgeous result. Cannot wait for some of the tutorials.

  14. WOW!!! That is amazing!! I love it!! yet it makes me jealous/sad lol because I can only imagine what you could have done in my living room!! lol
I LOVE LOVE the transformation!! You are AMAZING!

  15. Love, love, love it!!!! Fantastic job! I love seeing all the thrifty finds and how you make them new again. Definitely has been inspiring me lately to not have to have everything “new.” I can take something old, personalize it, and make it something no one else is gonna have. So many make overs are just too much $$$$$$ wasted on crap that everyone else is going to have. And I could imagine keeping the room the same for many years-its very inviting and bright!

  16. holy CRAP!! i seriously gasped when i saw the new room! A-MAZ-ING! holy cow! i love everything about it and basically want to copy it for my room. also, thanks to your sponsers! how awesome are they?? i hope they love it enough to have you do another one and i hope i win! my whole house needs help! okay. one more time. the room is amazing! i love love it!!

  17. It looks amazing! I can’t believe how much lighter and brighter the whole room looks. What a great job! Can’t wait to see some of the tutorials.

  18. OH WOW!!!! I knew it would be fab, but this is ultra-fab!!! It looks way better than any of those room makeover shows on TV ever look, that’s for sure. I’m in complete awe over your awesomeness.

    For Reals.

  19. Dear Mandi,
I love you and you are A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.!!!! Everything turned out so awesome and I love your little touches that are distinctly craptastic! So happy the headboard turned out for you. Seriously, it all looks great!

    XOXO
    Tam

  20. Seriously?!?!?! This room is a.ma.zing!! I am loving the color combination-so fresh. And, the yellow popping through the mirror is just enough to make a statement.

I am working on those bookcases and can’t wait to show you.

  21. My two faves are the headboard and the chair. I’m ‘pinning’ them both for future reference. Two thumbs up from Oregon. Can you come here next? :o)

    Take care,
    Erin

  29. Love the reveal! Great and creative job!

I’m curious how Purdy made you not hate cutting in anymore. I got a paint project coming up and I still hate cutting in. Maybe it’s ’cause we have textured walls? I’d love to hear more.

  30. What an amazing before and after!! The new room looks fabulous; so much brighter and very chic! I love what you did with the room and am inspired by your creativity. Great job, Mandi!!

  36. It looks awesome! Great job! I love so many things but I think my faves are the wall behind the headboard and the great little detail on the rug. Oh, and the yellow dresser make over, chair and chandelier. Okay so maybe I just love all of it. Great job!

  37. Wow, it came out absolutely amazing. If i wasn’t totally intimidated I would totally try to make the headboard and the chair you remade, so brilliant. You are so talented, come to California, redo my room pleaseeeeeeeeee, i need a sleepy oasis that I know you can help me with:) Awesome job.

  38. HOLY CRAP. HOLY CRAP!!! It is so freaking BRILLIANT! I cannot say how much I love this room! Jessica is the luckiest girl EVER! You have outdone yourself, Mandi!

    I am so serious!

And I didn’t help you! I made your life harder!

    LOVE YOUR GUTS!

  39. Whoa…. I repeat WHOA. This is AMAZING! I could kick myself for not submitting an entry. This looks so awe inspiring. I absolutely LOVE it.

I hope you do another epic room makeover and I will get my tush in gear if you do!

  40. GORGEOUS! I love everything about the room, which is funny, because if I look at individual pieces it’s not my taste, but overall the room is PERFECTION. Makes me rethink a few things that I’m just okay with in my own house and how they might fit in a finished room…

    Seriously, so amazing!

Thank you to all your sponsors. Definitely an act of trust!

  41. WOW!!! I knew you had talent but man, even knowing how much talent you have, I was still blown away! This room is amazing. You so need your own show or something. And I’m super curious about how you re-did that chair.

    P.S. You’re awesome!!!

  42. Wow Mandi….you have outdone yourself and I’m sure you are exhausted! The lucky winner must be beside herself! I love the closet doors and can’t wait to see a tutorial on them. Someday we are going to meet in real life, and it’s going to be awesome!! Nice job friend!
    xoxo,
    Jilly

  43. Uhh…are you freakin’ kidding me?! I was expecting “epic”, but this is beyond!! It looks amazing!! You’re like a DIY/thrifting/decorating/repurposing GODDESS!! Love it!

  44. WOW! Everything looks SO good. I love the wall stencil & colors…that’s like exactly what I want! The headboard is amazing. I want to copy it but it looks hard with the crown molding. great job! I am in love with each & every thing in this room. You guys really did pull off some magic! Oooooh & the CHANDY! I absolutely love the chandy!!! I must have one now.
Thank you to all of the sponsors for this contest- you guys are awesome! I need to go get some paint & glaze & get my butt in gear working on some projects!

  45. omg. can i just say your creativity, your imagination, your decorating skills are absolutely freaking AMAZING! seriously!!! i LOVE everything you did. adorable and just down right SWEET!!!

  46. Wow! That room is gorgeous! What a phenomenal job you ladies did. All of the colors go so well together and I love the walls.

  47. So.very.cool. I love it! I am especially impressed with the headboard and the chandy. And those his/hers lamps are a really fun touch. Way to go!

  48. EPIC! Yes! Seriously an amazing transformation. I wish my brain had a little more of what yours does! So creative! So awesome!

  49. You are an AMAZING lady!! I was shocked and stunned and utterly jealous!! What a wonderful treat. I don’t have just 1 favorite. I want a room like THAT ONE!! I can’t wait for your tutorials. You’ve shown that any DIYer can produce a beautiful, gorgeous room. THANK YOU FOR THE INSPIRATION!

  50. I love it! So bright and colorful. The only request for the next makeover (as I KNOW you will do another one!) would be to tell us how you accommodated all of her necessities. For example, you got rid of of storage (ie dressers) that were in the room — where did the stuff that was in them go? Was most of it unneeded, or will she end up piling things in the corners or on the chair as time goes on? And where is her workout calendar now? You know, we all have things in bad places, but it’s nice to know that everything that was needed has been taken into consideration. That’s the one thing that bothers me about decorating shows….they just ignore that the person had things there for a reason and then just toss them. And you just know that those things make it back into the room and now it doesn’t look great anymore ๐Ÿ™
That aside — you did an amazing job on this room and I’m sure she loves it/you!

  51. So first I was going to say that I LOVED the stenciled wall…and then I kept reading and decided I may love the awesome light fixture more…and then I changed my mind and wanted to comment that I loved the closet awesomeness…and then I decided I definitely loved the cute chair. So, really, this room is simply amazing and that’s all there is to it!

Wanna have another contest, pick me, and makeover my living room?

  53. Okay, this is so redundant at this point, but holy freakin’ crap!!! That is nutso amazing!! In one week??? Why don’t you have your own show?? I love everything… the colors, the touches of whimsy, the touches of sophistication, the headboard!! Holy crap, that headboard! Fantastic job!

  54. WOAH! you ARE miss America. Way to go girl. I am super super impressed. I am speechless. Also thanks for hosting SLC GNO it was a blast and gave me a creativity booster. =)

I can’t wait to see all of your tutorials for everything!! You have inspired me, for sure!! Thanks!!

I’m moving to St. George soon and am hoping there will be another meet up – I love your blog and your amazing projects.

    Thank you! ๐Ÿ™‚

  81. This is beautiful. I want you to know that I check your blog regularly and almost never comment even though I’m drooling over all your projects. I want you to know so that you know that there are at least double the number of people who commented on this post who are actually checking it out and loving it. Way to go!

  82. just lovely! I love it (even the yellow, which I usually hate). Still wish I’d been the lucky recipient. It was wonderful seeing you this weekend and I hope your next few days are simply wonderful!

  83. Mandi! You have such a talent! This makeover is so amazing, my favorite part is the stenciled wall.

I’m so happy I got to know you this weekend. What a blast we had!

    Thanks for everything!

  84. This is fantastic! I am beyond impressed. I am absolutely going to give the door headboard a try. HOWEVER, I am DYING for the instructions on the doors for the closets. Please share! They are amazing!

  85. oh. my. goodness. The door as the headboard is my favorite. That green is great. And also the chandelier. What a fabulous idea. And also the mirror is so beautiful. Ok, I like it all. Excellent job!!

  86. Saw you on the Nate Berkus show today…..instantly a huge fan! I am so amazed/intrigued/jealous/inspired by your talent! Now, if I could just figure out how to do it myself!

  87. omgggggg i absolutely love the room! i cant wait to move into my new apartment in September and do alot of DIY!

  88. what a fantastic job you did! love the gray (stenciled) walls with the pops of color. my favorite element has to be the campaign dresser in the bold yellow. and the board and batten on the closet doors – genius!

  89. Are you kidding me with this room?! It’s simply too much goodness in one space. I can hardly stand it! Okay, that chandelier is one of the most ingenious things I’ve ever seen. When I saw it in the very first picture, I seriously thought it was a major splurge item for the room. I might have to copy this idea, because it just so happens that I have that exact “before” chandelier in storage just waiting for a makeover for my office.

Ummmm…wow. Just, wow. The whole room is amazing…the headboard, the board and batten, the stencil, the chair with the jute upholstery webbing (genius!!). Amazing.

  90. so amazing!!!! I cannot even begin to tell you what I love about this room. That chair is fantastic, you’re going to have to spill on what you did with that webbing, it’s gorgeous. Wow. Just speechless on everything!!!

And as much as I love it, I’m just as much bummed that I didn’t win! Haha, here’s to round two but congrats to Jessica, she deserved it!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  91. BRAVO!!!! WOW!!!! I just love it all. That chair is my fav. and the whole chair nook area with the fab. stencil job. You should be so darn proud, well well well done! winks-jen

  92. I LOVE the headboard!!! We’re about to move into a new house, and the master will be painted a dark-ish grey. Any suggestions on how to go about making a white version of the headboard?

    [email protected]

  94. Mandy-
So much to love in this room makeover! First of all the gray stenciled wall–WOW! I love the weaving on the chair with the upholstery webbing; so modern. The whole room looks amazing and I adore the color scheme. Congratulations on all your hard work!

  95. Oh my heck…I need you to come do my room!! but can you please please please do a tutorial on that chair?? I found one almost exactly like it, and it has the same issue and I loved yours!!
h and where do you keep finding those amazing mirrors?
    thanks karli

  96. Gorgeous. I love the color scheme. I would be interested to read more about the closet solution, though. What did you end up doing with the jewelry armoire?

  97. wow, mandi!! it’s beautiful! good work girly!

also, my mom told me your happy news! i’m so excited for you guys… just wish we could be there. love you!

  98. I literally sighed from jealousy!! This room is absolutely GORGEOUS! I love everything about it. Mandi- you’re a GENIUS!

  99. This is GORGEOUS!!! You are just pretty much awesome! BTW, lovin’ the framed map of Oklahoma. I might be biased since I live there, but it’s still awesome! And Krylon’s emerald green is my absolute fave color right now!

  100. Oh my gosh! This is beyond amazing! We just moved into a new home, so none of my rooms are trashed, but every single one lacks character. It is all simple furniture and tan walls. I would love to end up with something like this!

I’m starting on my first room (and the husband is against painting walls and furniture), so I’ve got some ideas to spruce it up. We’ll see how it ends up! Hopefully it’s fun pops of color and not a train wreck.

Kudos to you and your fab sponsors for such an amazing room! Oh, and Iw as just googling for yellow spray paint today (to paint some vases) and that Sun Yellow form Krylon is absolutely perfect! So thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

  101. What a fabulous makeover! Did everything that was in the room before (or at least everything they needed to be in the room) go back in? I love the duvet and dresser and stencil and just so much. I wish I owned my home and could paint and stencil and win a contest to have you visit and help me revamp my digs.

  102. I have to say that the room is not exactly my style, nor do I usually comment on blogs.

I felt compelled to do so here b/c WOW! What you have done is fabulous!!!! Between the lighting, board & batten closet doors (hoping to borrow your idea for my entry closets), his & hers lamps, the stencil…I could go on. Not to mention the transformation. So impressed!

  103. Great job!! Love the chair and the chandelier! Also the closet doors…I went ahead and madeover my room…wish I had waited…would have done my closet doors like yours…instead hung curtains…

  104. WOW! WOW! WOW!
I am so sad that I didn’t win, but I am sooooo even more happy for this awesome job you did here, and I am totally lovin’ the green!!!!!!

  105. LOVE IT!!!!!
i so want that headboard.. might finally bust out that stencil too.
(it’s only been two months now..)

  106. I have the same rug! I would love to punch it up with a little color, can you please give a little description when you post the tutorials?
ps-I discovered you on Nate and I have been on this blog ALL DAY! I’m getting so many great ideas, you are an inspiration!!!

  107. I completely love this room, and it was my first introduction to your blog… WOW! What talent you have and you are just SO MUCH FUN! I have this affinity for pretty blogs, and yours definitely is amazing. Thanks for the inspiration.

  108. Hey Mandy – CAn you tell me where you got the lampshades you used in this room? I’m trying to find some barrel shaped like that – instead of ‘cone’ shaped. Thrifted? Or new?

  109. Friggin BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!! I can’t say enough how much I love everything you did!!!!!! I have to ask though….the dresser and the headboard…you say you used Krylon….as in spray paint??? Seriously??? You blow my mind! I am hoping you do another bedroom makeover soon! I want you to do mine!!! Maybe my whole house…too much??? Naaahhh! ๐Ÿ˜‰ MUAH!

  110. It’s spectacular! I have that same Ikea rug and I’m going to steal that idea of giving it a little pop of color.

  111. HOLY COW BATMAN! I AM BLOWN AWAY BY YOUR AWESOMENESS! This is my first time to your blog and I am HOOKED! Painting the rug?! Who knoew you could do that?! LOVE IT!!!! I’ll be back for more!!!

  112. I absolutely love your closet doors! Great idea! Please, please, please do a tutorial on them! Thank you! ๐Ÿ™‚

  113. i must say the chair makeover with the webbed sides is what made my heart all a-flutter! i just picked up a “barrel chair” as it was listed on freecycle. squeal!i.can.not.wait to rip it apart now that i’ve seen your project. i have lots of ideas swirling around in my head…caning is perfect so i may just re-upholster the back with the webbing. must check out your how-to’s.
    love it all.

  114. Hello Darling :-),
I am changing up my bedding, and I oh so badly, want my new duvet to be just like the one in this room make over! Can you please tell me where its from?
    Thanks,
    Leila from AZ

  116. I was so excited to see the yellow lingerie chest. I have a dresser that matches! I found it in a thrift store in Virginia. Mine was already yellow, that’s what made me fall in love with it.

  117. I pinned this on pinterest.

I can not believe how incredible this room turned out. I saw the one you did for “Hailee’s Living Room” and I am in awe of your skills. My entire house is a makeover nightmare and I am slowly going to try to get a sweet space like this or like Hailees somewhere in the house. I don’t know if the code is still good, but I am going to head over to get a little bit of stencil love from your sponsor! tah tah for now!

  118. So the whole room is amazing! I love how you took the door and made it into a headboard. But I seriously have to know where you got the white ruffled comforter? I am in love with it!

  119. Found this on Pinterest!! I LOVE the headboard… And Everything else in the room. Where did the bedspread come from? You did an awesome job with the room. So glad I found your blog. Traciethomas@aol

  120. So I just painted master bedroom in dutch boy Empire State with a satin finish. It doesn’t look like a true gray like yours in the post but seems to almost have a gray undertone. I just have the first coat on so far so maybe that will make a difference. Any advice, words of wisdom or reassurance?;)

  121. I am in the process of painting our master bedroom in Dutch boys Empire State with a satin finish. It doesn’t seem to be a true gray like your blog but seems to have a blue undertone, I currently only have one coat so that may make a difference. Any advice, words of wisdom or reassurance? That is the paint color you used correct?
