The Thrifting Adventures Of Wanda and Sylvia

By Mandi 09/23/2011

Hello friends! I feel like I have been gone all week! (Probably cause I have!)  Hailey and I are workin like crazy ladies to get her living room makeover done…which might have migrated into her hallway last night….. Her husband Mark was REALLY excited about that.

So if you follow me on Facebook you know we ventured out yesterday as our alter egos Wanda (Hailey) and Sylvia (Me). Wanda and Sylvia originally appeared last year while making a back to school video for the PTA. They show up at lots of fun school events and TOTALLY rock everyones world.

So today we decided to head out and liven St. George up a little. Here is an afternoon in the life of Wanda and Sylvia:

Heading to the DI (Utah’s version of Goodwill).

Look at these lamps!!

Little Boy Blue and Little Bo Peep lamps. Pretty much amazing. I think that they are right at home in Wanda’s Camper.

Now you MUST tell me if people are like this at your thrift store. Its crazy what happens when they bring out new goods.

Plus there is some seriously awesome junk there:

We did pass on the lamps. I know you are disappointed. But these are the real scores that day:

Then after the DI we went to Walmart to get supplies for the days projects. Apparently Sylvia loves Krylon just as much as Mandi does…

Then the best part ever. We went to Durango’s (the restaurant that my hubs runs) went through the line, got our food, paid for it AND were sitting down eating for 5 minutes before Court recognized me. He literally looked directly at me 3 times and didn’t recognize me.

At. All.

Plus I also learned that I suck at keeping a straight face.

Have a wonderful weekend! Hopefully we will have a killer room to show you next post!!!

Love Your Guts

  1. I can’t wait to see your room reveal! I am completely jealous that you can freely grab spray paint. I live in Vegas, and it is locked up at every store. You have to track somebody down to unlock it for you. Crappy little taggers.

  2. I am SO JEALOUS of all your spray paint color choices. I have a row of maybe 15 in the stores around here. mainly brown and metallic.

  3. Hilarious ladies!! What is so funny up here is that before DI even opens the number of customers waiting just to get in. And, the men outnumber the women 3 to 1!

  4. I can’t wait to see the room makeover….and I too am super jealous at the color selection, I have about 5 choices. Or Michael’s which sells it for double the price and you still only get 5 choices!

  5. Those lamps are a version of some olllldd paintings called Pinky & Blue Boy! My grandpa had replicas of the paintings in his study and I always loved them. Just a little history for you! Love your video =)

  6. i LOVE durango’s! I didn’t know your husband runs it! We were just down for Little Mermaid and didn’t go to durango’s and now i’m SUPER sad. Love the disguises, the DI kills me, oh the people it brings out… can’t wait to see the room!

  7. Your video is hilarious! Not too long ago, I had a dr. appt, bright and early, that I went to. I had been on the hunt for something specific, so I was going to DI EVERY day. It happens to be right by my doctor’s office, so when I was done, I decided that rather than go home and drive back later, that I’d just sit in the parking lot and wait for them to open. It was only like 20 minutes, so I pulled out my book and read for a bit. When I finished the chapter I was reading, I looked up to see the front doors SWARMED with people waiting for the doors to be unlocked. It was like black friday, I kid not! Then, the saaaame thing happened with the cart that happened in your video. People were grabbing and pushing. I couldn’t believe it. Funny thing is, NO ONE touched the cute little chandy that I had my eye on! Whew! It was intense.

  8. Don’t usually comment but I just bought (at a Goodwill where I live) the EXACT same glass bowl with the silver rim. Crazy! I am turning mine into a mercury glass bowl so I am excited to see what you do with yours! Love your blog and love your creativity!

  9. Hilarious! Love the video. People are like piranhas at our Goodwills too. I feel sorry for the ladies who have to unload them. Well, what they do get to unload. They should just put the cart out for a few minutes and then shelve what’s left. LOL

  10. OMG! You to girls are hilarious. I am so excited to see what the finished product looks like. Oh and by the way how come you weren’t charging for anything on that cart. There had to be something…lol

  11. We eat at Durango’s pretty much every week although my husband would be perfectly content with everyday! haha. But I wonder…why are you wearing a long sleeve shirt silly girl? It’s 100 degrees outside. No joke! 😛

  12. OMG those people are nuts!! So funny. Doesn’t happen at my Goodwill but I kinda wish it did. I was waiting for some punches to be thrown lol.

  13. I went to the D.I. a couple weeks ago and I found that same glass bowl and I purchased it! My mom thought I was crazy but now I see that you have it so I guess Im not so crazy.

  14. So funny! People in northern Utah mob the DI cart before they even park it! Ha ha! Too funny! My friends and I would ALWAYS dress up and shop…sometimes 80’s themed, sometimes prom…I miss having friends! 🙂 I’ll have to start dressing up my kids…hmmm

  15. You crack me up… Now I HAVE to thrift with you lol …. I think people turn into zombies when the cart comes out… BRRRAAAAINNNS! lol Those lamps were pretty awesome!

  16. Ok. I live in Chicago, and here in the city stores are not legally allowed to sell spray paint (something to do with graffiti). TO see a shelf like that makes me jealous. Even the hardware stores in the burbs don’t carry that much – and Home Depot and Lowes don’t stock Krylon!

  17. ha ha ha ha I cant believe your hubby didn’t notice you lol that just cracks me up! We have swarms of people waiting outside of our DI’s! The vast majority of them are men so I’m never too worried 😉 I had to shew off some little old lady that tried to take off with my steamer trunk once! I went up to pay for it and was on my way back when I spotted her wheeling it away on a cart….. she didn’t get very far lol 😉 you gotta get crazy when you go to the DI!

  18. Haha. People are definitely like that at the DI I go to! The cart doesn’t even make it out of the back! There’s people that just swarm in the back by the doors until another cart comes out. CRAZY!

  19. Hiya! LOVE the DI, maaaaybe too much!

Just FYI – those crazy lamps…they’re actually of “Pinkie” and “The Blue Boy” – obviously funky lamps made to mimic the 18th century paintings by Thomas Lawrence and Thomas Gainsborough. I know this because the original paintings (which are HUGE, by the way) are displayed near my hometown of Pasadena, CA.

Kinda fun to know the history of funky 60’s knock off stuff, right? Right? 😉

  20. BAHAHAHA!! You guys remind me of me and my sister ~ we love going on store adventures in outrageous clothes/wigs. We should be best friends. 😉

  21. Mandi,
Have you ever been to the Provo DI? There are some people that hang out in the yard all day waiting for the the carts to come out. My sister and I call them “vultures”. Some even stand right by the doors so they can see when the carts approach. When the carts come out its a mad rush. Good times! You should definitely try it if you have not.

  22. I’ve never seen Pinkie and Blue Boy lamps before. (I’m sure someone was thrilled with their lucky find.)

Thrifting is definitely not for the weak of heart here in Texas, either and sometimes even becomes a contact sport!

It seems as though you had a great time.

  23. That was too funny! Oh my gosh it looked like zombies. I’m going to have to pay more attention when I go to DI. Loved the wigs! You just crack me up!

  24. You two are hilarious! I love the energy you bring to finding a great bargain 🙂 Can’t wait to see how you transform the room…

  25. Ok, that video was beyond hillarious! They were almost like zombies following that cart! lol! First time visiting your blog and I have to say, I’m so distraught that you guys passed on those lamps! I would have changed out those shades and put ’em in a boy/girl twin nursery combo. Your other finds were great too though!

  26. Hahahaha………All i’ve gotta say is WOW!! Gotta love those cart crashers! Sylvia and Wanda found some pretty cool things that day at the DI. I’m thinking they need to make another appearance here real soon! But I heard that Wanda got her hair did and had a little make over. Can’t wait for the DI to see it!
Love ya Sylvia…….You are AMAZING and I can’t wait for everyone to see the room you created from boring to awesomeness!!

  27. I was in awe over your paint choices there, then I realized hey they(the cans) aren’t behind prison gates like they are here in my neck of the woods (Fresno, CA). We have alot of taggers who ruin it for the rest of us! Cute Blog too!

  28. You. Did. Not. Pass. Up. Those. Lamps.

    Seriously?!!!

If I send you the money, will you please go get them for me?

    Only half kidding.

It’s agony to know those lamps are in UT when I’m in OH.

And, would someone please like to tell me why my local thrift places a) have nowhere near the cool stuff as your thrift places, and b) are so much more reasonably priced than my thrift places?

    Sigh.

  29. This post is so funny! It looks like your alter egos had a blast!

Thanks for making me smile. If you and Brooke decide to do another blog get together in St. George, I think that wigs, spray paint, and diy shirts should be mandatory 🙂

Looking forward to the big reveal…

  30. LOVE the Pinkie and Blueboy lamps, please find a way to contact me if you ever run across another pair, I’d buy them for sure!
