We are starting a movement people!
Its called Thrift Shop Glam.
Its for all of us DIYers whose junk is too butch and colorful for Shabby Chic, and a little to old and eclectic for Modern.
Thrift Shop: a retail store that sells secondhand goods at reduced prices.
The way that I define Thrift Shop Glam:
Going to your favorite Thrift store, craigslist, garage sales, and the curb and finding awesome and completely random junk. Taking it home and refinishing, refreshing, and repurposing it. Its an eclectic and eccentric mix of things that wouldn't normally be put together. For example:
Normally you wouldnt see a chandelier with a sign that says "Please Drive Slowly and watch for Old Horses, Blind Dogs, and Unruly Kids for the next 2 miles." Ha ha I love that thing.
Its for those of us that like old worn out stuff that others would not even give a second glance.
Its distressed furniture that's funky colors.
Its being unique and having things that no one else does.
Its putting something in your house BECAUSE YOU LIKE IT! Not worrying if it "goes" perfectly. (You can always paint it!)
Its spending more $ on the paint than the actual piece of furniture.
Its letting your creativity be the driving force.
Its chandy's, baroque frames, strange figurines, old wood, and lots and lots of spray paint.
Its a hodge podge of junk that makes you happy!

LOVE LOVE LOVE those mirrors! My attempt at that same look wasn't quite as successful !:)
ReplyDeleteI am joining your movement!! I have definitely paid more for the paint than the furniture on more than one occasion!! Love the post!!
ReplyDeleteI think I just found you! Seriously- I found you today at MMS furn.feat.fri. and... I saw this post...and there's no place like home, there's no place like home, there's no place like home...

Where have you been all my life?
I'm so happy I found you... I'm following now!

ReplyDeleteI LOVE THIS! I have never had such a succinct way of describing my style!
ReplyDeleteIs there a way we can share our Thrift-Shop Glam too?
Nice blog, awesome work!
ReplyDeleteI hate waste, and consumerism. Thanks for your great ideas. I will look to recycle and make something awesome this weekend.
I am so in on your movement. I grew up this way and am proud to say I have carried it into my own life. Is their any other way to shop??? Thanks for bringing it forward!
ReplyDeleteOH yeah. I knew Shabby Chic wasn't quite where I was going, and Salvaged Antique definitely was not what was happening. Thrift Shop Glam. Now THAT's what I'm TALKING about!!! Perfect. I bought a (big time fixer upper) house 2 years ago, and had 3 cents left over to furnish. Fast forward through a few years of Freecycle, and a few friends who have upgraded, and I spent a total of $5.25 on all the furniture in my 1,100 sf home, excluding the mattress & boxspring. Not including the paint purchased at the 'Whoops' rack at Home Depot... although I've gotten paint from Freecycle too. Hooray for repurposers!
ReplyDeleteDee, grrl, you know it's true, my sister from another mother! I know exactly what you're talking about, I get that shivering, creepy, feeling just THINKING about going to my favorite hardware store or HD! (...ok, deep breaths...)
DeleteI love crap, the junkier, funkier the better. My apt is a total non-stop "project"
("...oh, no, no, don't move that canoe oar leaning in the corner - I'm gonna use that for something, I just don't quite know what yet...!)I'm a Freecyle Diva & unapologetic Dumpster-Diver (aren't we all??) So glad I found Mandy's gem of a DIY blog. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. Now, hand me that can of spray paint...
Susan
Hallelujah! People who are just like me! And we even have a name?!!! I love it, "Thrift Shop Glam"! The term "shabby chic" always left a bad taste in my mouth.
ReplyDeleteJust watched you on Nate and I'm so jealous you got to meet him, love him and now love you and your style!!! Thanks for the great ideas! Jennifer in Minnesota
ReplyDeleteSaw you on Nate and had to look up the DIY for the mirrors. Love them. Love the Thrift Shop Glam idea. Don't like shabby chic, because I don't think this style is shabby. Looking forward to reading more on your blog. Patti in Iowa
ReplyDeleteI lveo ti and I love your style!!

ReplyDeleteWhat to the what??????? There's a name for my crap n' paint addiction. As they say in the Bible Belt, "Name it and claim it, Sister."
ReplyDeletei wish i had this blog 7 years ago!! I could have saved alot of hard earned moola!! thanks for this.
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love. Yes, yes, yes. I was wondering where I fit in in all this shabby chic, cottagey, thrift shop, flea market, country style stuff!
ReplyDeleteP.S. find my newest adventure at http://salvagemaid.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteLove the look of all the frames and mirrors and fabrics! And that blue chandelier is great too!
ReplyDeleteThat looks awesome! Like something I'd have in my house~
ReplyDeleteLOVE it!
ReplyDeleteCan I quote you on my blog? "Its spending more $ on the paint than the actual piece of furniture."
ReplyDeleteGah. I LOVE that.
So, you are saying its ok to spend more on paint then the item itself? GREAT!!! then I'm not weird at all :) I love your blog!
ReplyDeleteYep! I love this movement because I always spend more on paint then the actual piece!
ReplyDeleteha! thank you for being so NOT on the Shabby Chic bandwagon...sometimes the prettiness of it sucks you in and then you find yourself thinking, "Since when do I like all white everything?...I have kids for cryin' out loud!!"
ReplyDeletejust found your blog today (happy dance) and am officially in the Thrift Shop Glam, Thank you 'Mam Camp!
I have a collection of ceramic teapots that I love. How did you put holes in your teapots without breaking them?
ReplyDeletehow did you put holes in the teapots without breaking them?
ReplyDeleteI saw you and your lovely home on the Nate Berkus show and LOVE what you create! Your talent abounds!
ReplyDeleteMs Canada
YOU, my dear, are all KINDS of amazing!!
ReplyDeleteThrift Shop Glam...that's me! I don't fit into the muted whites of shabby chic, I love color too much. Just found you off of Curbly and now I'm obsessed. Thank you!
ReplyDeletei love thift shop glam!!! one thing that maybe you could post about and give some direction to is color scheme. i love color! and so do you, but you put color together so well and it blends so perfectly. so whats your process??? hmmmmmm....
ReplyDeleteI started "thrifting and trash picking" with my MomMom when I was about 6. That was 40 years ago and it is still one of my favorite things to do. I love seeing past something that is not in pristine condition and making it beautiful again- perhaps in a different way. Thanks for a great site to share some new ideas and finds. For some, thrifting may sound cheap, but, I think it's a no brainer....and it's less to go in the landfills.
ReplyDeleteIn New Zealand we call them op shops, not thrift shops. Op is short for opportunity. Says it all, really.
ReplyDeleteYou are amazing, Mandi! When I read that bit about Shabby Chic, it clicked. True, I do like white but I'll always take a rockin' red over white. Plus those Laura Ashley rooms always look so - so - so unliveable. Like if you DID live there it would need totally redone in a month! Thanks for spearheading the movement!
