Turning The Living Room Into A Loft (!!!)

By Mandi 02/24/2015

I mean. Did you think that it wouldn’t happen?

The living room is being turned into a loft! (Well obviously not an actual loft but a totally loft-like space!!)

Now I know what some of you are thinking. Already?! I loved your living room! etc. etc. Well the truth is that my living room looks nothing like it did 2+ years ago when I shared it with you. The orange couch was the star, and with it’s demise, is now having a child actor moment in the storage unit. Almost all of the other furniture was sold at the last Hoard Sale, and dang it, I wanted a change.

I know when I start to get antsy (like looking for another house) its time for something new. I have been utterly consumed with living in a warehouse space, the problem is that Court doesn’t love old things. That will never happen in my marriage. So I had to find a way to make the space we have feel loft-ish. The good news is that we have really high ceilings so its totally doable.

The plans include:

1. BRICK! Ok so I am just going to say this so that you know how entirely obsessed I am. Brick is the new Leather. I feel like that wraps it up in a neat little package no? After seeing how it transformed Durango’s it was an easy choice.

2. Lots of new lighting to brighten up the space.

3. A settlement on the couch debate (still haven’t decided, I need to move everything in and try it out)

4. Art of course, but not just any art. If the plan actually works it is going to be FREAKING AMAZING art. We’ll see.

5. Plants and lots of them.

So what do you think? Do you support the loft movement?

  1. Love it!! Fun and fantastic idea and I can’t wait to see how you do it! And I LOVE both of the couches that are waiting in the wings, so either one will be incredible–and it will just come down to the one that fits with the rest of your vision (or helps inspire the design you fall in love with). Thank you for doing what you do and sharing it with all of us!

  2. I had an a-maz-ing loft at my first job, only I hated the job and the city it was in. I was so so crushed to leave the loft, so I’m excited to see how you transform this space!

  3. Totally love the loft idea. I looked at your living room photo and totally imagined it. Love the brick idea. Wonder if my hubs would ever go for it?

  4. I loved (and still do) your old living room, but that does not mean I am no freaking excited to see your loft-inspired space. It is going to be fantastic! (I love how you don’f let yourself be limited by where you live <3)

  5. Love it! I have a vintage log table like the one in your inspiration picture, but it’s dark and shiny (lacquer, I’m guessing). I’m trying to decide if I should embrace it as is, or try getting all that stuff off somehow?? Thoughts?

  6. Can’t wait to see how you do the brick. We are going to finish our family room downstairs and I am dying to do an exposed brick wall! Just not sure how…

  7. I totally support the loft movement! My husband’s and my first place was a loft in a renovated warehouse. It had the original brick and hardwoods running through it. We totally loved it, but my hub was in the Army and got stationed somewhere else after we had only been there a few months.

  8. Yes, this definitely has to happen, seeing as you are the queen of wild and crazy wall treatments. Can’t wait to see how it all goes down!

  9. Yes! It is my dream to live in a loft. But out on our farm. In a corner of Iowa. Yeah, not going to happen here either. But, perhaps if you can transform your living room into a loft so can I! Cannot wait to see the final product!

  10. I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to do brick on some of my walls! I cannot wait to see how this all turns out! Make sure to tell us where you got the brick! EEEEEEE!!! I’m so excited to see it all done!

  11. ahhh I love brick! One of my houses as a kid had an interior brick wall and even then I thought it was the best. I am excited to see the posts on it.

  12. If you’re going lofty I think the black couch is an easy pick. I bet the green ones would look phenomenal with your flair but it looks more challenging With the loft theme. Can’t wait to see what you do! *suspense*

  13. Ummm this whole loft idea is awesome Mandi. Based on your social media activity im not the least bit surprised by it either. Cant wait to see this my friend.

  14. as a true gemini I always support change all the time. and I can’t wait to see your very particular style mixed with loft.

  15. Oh my gosh this is my life if I can’t move I’ll just have to redo everything every few months

  16. You GO GIRL!!!! Do what makes you happy! You are inspiring to me and also HILARIOUS!!! LOL. I loved your living room before but anxiously await your new direction. I love loft spaces. I remember my fifth grade teacher lived in a loft in downtown New York and when she took our class to her place, I was in awe of the space. I will never forget it. Brick, oh how I love them SO!!! I know it will be awesome once your done.

  17. I apploud you for changing up your home so often. I wish I had the finances to do so myself, because I like you love changing it up and trying new things. I wish to see some budget friendly DIY’s for the everyday home. Keep up the good work!

  18. Support would be an understatement. Morgan and I dream and scheme of where to live just so we can find an awesome Loft. Just need to get these kids up and grown… but not too fast! Super excited to see what you do.

  19. Can’t wait to see what you come up with! Can you please do a DIY post on the geometric light you did in the Nugget? Thanks!

  20. Love the idea! It will be a beast to remove when you want to change it in a few years and/or might affect resale value…but I’m sure you’ve thought all that through. 🙂

  21. YES to the loft. We’re obsessed with it too, and especially the old, exposed brick look. They make a faux brick tile you could always use!

  22. Wow, verrryyy much misunderstood the title at first and thought that you were going to literally BUILD A LOFT in the living room, as in, build a loft platform and have two different levels in the living room. I was like, “Really? Really? What?” but figured that if anyone could pull it off, it would be you. Your actual plan does seem much easier though, looking forward to it 😉

  23. How have I not signed up for these emails yet. I need to know the newest developments of THIS as soon as they’re posted. LOVE

  24. Excited to see how you use the brick because it’s not my thing unless in a “loft”. I’m sure it will be awesome like everything you do.

  25. I completely support your loft movement! In fact, I adore your “loft”. The brick, the high ceilings, the great light, the art…girl, you went loft crazy and it looks FABULOUS!

  26. We were so close to white washing our brick wall that our fire place is on in our basement. But, after we painted the paneling (wooooof!!!) bright white, I kinda dig the bricks, and I’m glad we didn’t mess with them. I love me a loft space also, but we do not have high ceilings. Now this has me to thinkin’ … how can I loftify a 1959 split level (or at least part of it?) …. ?

  27. I completely support the loft movement. I have ALWAYS wanted a brick wall inside my house. Or should I say brick WALLS? If only… I found out Urban Outfitters sells brick wallpaper… might be where I have to start.
