Saving My Marriage, One Light At A Time.

By Mandi 08/29/2013

Please tell me that I am not the only person on this earth that unintentionally makes my husband curse my name.

It is a given that if Court comes home from work and the garage light is on, he is not going to be happy about it.

For 3 reasons.

1. If the garage light is on, it means that I have been inside…which only happens if I am buying furniture.

2. The light has probably been on for a few hours.

3. I have no idea that it is on, which means when he asks me about it,  it is a dead giveaway that I had no intention of turning it off.

When Lutron asked if I had a place in my house to install their Occupancy Sensor light switch, my garage was the first place that came to mind.

Look at you Lutron, making me look like I am not still hoarding things and being all ecologically responsible. We are now in love.

Installing a light switch is actually extremely simple. I made you a video. Because it is just that easy.

Now,  because life isnt all roses and spray paint, I just want to give you a heads up. These programmable light switches need to come with um… a word of warning.

I installed one in my Master Bedroom and had it programmed wrong. To the tune of every time Wallace jumped off the bed, or Dylan sat up,  the freaking light turned on (this was uber frequently because she was still trying to adjust to the giant cast from her broken arm). By the next morning I was ready to rip it out of the wall and HURT someone with it.

So I emailed my girl Britt, and I was like “Dude. I know that something is wrong, because this is not a good business model. People need their sleep.” She explained that when the light is in a high traffic room, you need to set it to Vacancy Mode (which is Manual On and Auto Off) so just be aware of that little ditty,  unless of course you enjoy being a raging sleep deprived zombie. Then keep it on Occupancy Mode. And stay far far away from me. Now that mine is reprogrammed I love it.

I will update you guys in a month and let you know if the light in the garage situation has made Court’s undying love for me even stronger.

  1. Funny! I was going to put one in my garage too mainly because I'm rarely going in or out without something in my hands so turning it on and off is kind of a pain.

I was also thinking about the hallway. That gets left on all the time too. Hmmm, there are a bunch of rooms around the house that might benefit from a little automation.

  2. My husband is a light freak too! As a joke I went through the house and turned ALL the lights on just to watch him walk through the house, turn them off and then shake his head! He never said a word, but when he returned to the living room I looked up and said "Gotcha!" All he could do was laugh. I might have to purchase a few of these so I could win me a little more undying love 🙂

  3. Your hair is gorgeous all golden and blondy! 🙂 The light is a great idea…I may have a few places I need them too! Thanks!

  4. You're the 3rd blog they've given this to.

I probably have 15 motion sensors inside and outside my house. What I learned, is not to put them in rooms where you're going to hold still. Studies, Offices, Bedrooms, etc., They go off to quickly and you 1) either end up waiving your arms like you want the airplane to land, or 2) when something moves and you're trying to sleep, for example, it goes on.

They also have timers on them, so you can set the bathroom for 10 minutes, but the shower for 15 — or something like that. Mine are set that way for some time or another.

When I first got electricity in my house, I had the hall light put on a motion sensor. Previously to that, I just opened my cell phone to navigate through the construction. The 1st time I walked into the hall, the light went on, I had a heart attack, I threw my phone and screamed. I looked around to make certain there weren't any strangers in the house watching, grabbed my phone and told my electrician friend that there was too much light in my house. He had to come take this out. He laughed so hard I think he peed.

These things can save you a TON of money. I'm here to tell 'ya.

  5. Mandi…..My husband installed these over 20 years ago because I never turned off the lights! hands full of laundry, sewing projects, etc, etc….they are installed at the top of the cellar stairs, in my sewing room, the entrance to the workshop, in the powder room, and, a really great place, the garage (a blessing when you have a 130' driveway! The movement of the garage doors opening is all the movement needed to activate the lights! Solved lots of scoldings! Worth every dime! Happy Marriage!

  6. We just might need something like this as we redo all our wiring and lighting. In our house it's usually boyfriend who leaves all the lights on all the time. I'm all about saving energy (and cost) on lighting. Plus, parts of this house get very dark and I have a very overactive imagination.
