How To Drill Through Glass (Video Tutorial!!)

Making lighting is one of my FAVORITE DIYs ever.  Especially when it involves making something amazing out of something totally unexpected.  The one project Kelsey requested in her Epic Room Makeover was hanging bedside lights.  Aaaaaand because those are one design choice that I think everyone should make in their Master Bedroom I happily obliged.

Using vases and drilling though glass is nothing new to me (my first project was my Anthro Inspired Teacup Lamp 2 years ago) and I have gotten more questions about the specifics of that tutorial than anything else on my site.  (People are scared to drill through glass!)  So guess what?!  I made a video and show you EXACTLY how to do it without breaking your glass.

I found my vases for $16.99 at Homegoods.  If you are looking for glass to drill Homegoods is such a great place to find it!  Glass elsewhere can be super pricey (even at places like Target) the glass from Homegoods is WAY cheaper and much more unique.  homegoods

  1. This is a great tutorial! Still seems a little intimidating - but I'll definitely have to try this sometime!I'll probably wait until next summer though. That'll give me time to work up the courage as well as make it easier to do outside!

  4. I know the video was sped up in a lot of places so I'm just wondering how long it actually took from when you started drilling until when you broke through. I don't want to try it and end up going too fast. Thanks for such a great video!

  5. I have been checking out your blog and getting some fun diy ideas.
I just watched your tutorial on drilling glass and want to just give a couple suggestions for more ease to the project.
First use a guideplate (cheap at local hardware store and use over and over) to start a hole. Then you could try the sponge trick for keeping the glass consistently wet. Just dip a sponge in your water pitcher, hold it close to the hole and slowly squeeze as you drill.
Hope it helps. Thanks again for a great blog!!!!
