Someone Talk Me Down…

By Mandi 01/05/2011

Cause I’m Freakin Out Man!
So you know when you really love something you collect it a bunch? Especially when you are a thift store junkie,  you just cant pass up ONE MORE MIRROR. Hence your house will begin to look like mine….
(Click the pic to go to the project!)
Wall Of Mirrors
Cabinent Doors anyone?
I have more chairs that you will ever know. I am too embarrased to show you how many.
Anyways back to the debacle at hand,
I am having a obsession with painting walls. Its like the ultimate room transformation. But seriously, how much is too much? Does A&E need to make a special show just for me that combines Hoarders and Intervention?
This is all stemming from the fact that I REALLY want to repaint my living room with this awesome stencil that I won. I was planning on doing the entire room. But now I am getting cold feet. I just cant decide what to do. I am not really a simplify type of gal. But here is the dilem
Wall #1
Hallway
Which is actually this wall but I dont have a pic of it striped from far away…
(worst picture EVER.)
Wall #2
D-Wizzles Room
Wall #3
Ivie’s Room
Also my sewing room has yet to be revealed but,  I will just tell you the walls are Krylon Ocean Blue.
So on to the living room.
Here is the stencil once again for those that missed it.
Casablanca Allover Stencil
It is going to be gray lines and white everything else. I am hoping to brighten up the living room. So is it to much of a pattern everywhere? My entryway and kitchen and other hallways and rooms are just gray right now (notice I said right now.)
And I will be painting over the Seizure Wall FYI
I know I just need to grow a pair and try it out cause I am rarely wrong with my gut instinct,  but I dont want my house to look like a Magic Eye puzzle either…..
Comments, Questions and Concerns are very much appreciated at this point.
What would YOU like to do vicariously through my living room? (Keep it on subject please.)

  1. I love your frame wall and I love the blue and red together and that black and white wall with the owls heart… bubump bubump! I say you know what you are doing and it is your unique style! I suggest just give people’s eyes a place to rest and it should be great! Can’t wait to see what you do!

  2. Oh my goodness! I am the same. I love to paint walls as creatively as possible. Room- stripes, bathroom- diamonds, doggy corner (yup)- similar to your stencil. But… I have more plans believe it or not and I don’t think you should stop where you’re at! Keep going. It’ll look great and you’ll love it!! (most likely. haha!)Just think about how intricate the vitorian era was but how beautiful at the same time. You’ve just modernized that idea. 🙂 Ok, I’m done. haha!

  3. I do love all your paint choices, and I and so loving that stencil! I think it would be fabulous to do the stenced part the same color gray as the wall color, but use a shinier finish for the detail part! That adds alot of texture and depth to the room without adding another color!

  4. GASP! 😀 I just had to comment again, I’m so happy we’re blogging friends now!!! Your comment gave me so much joy! Thank you!

  5. your home is clean, eclectic and yours! Don’t stop! Instead, come to mine ( when yours is done for awhile) where my walls are bare and I don’t have enough of the right kind of furniture. 🙂

  6. Yes, stencil that wall! I love it and I really love the idea of the metallic tone on tone.

I am now going to stalk your blog even more, I can’t wait to see that blue ocean breeze sewing room! I have to say that if there is a show started for junk hording thrifters I would also get an episode. I cant stand junk and clutter but my garage is a whole different story. He he. Lets just say I hoard cans of blue ocean breeze due to the distance I have to travel to get my hands on it. LOL.

  7. Have to add that I am currently in the process of FINALLY painting my living room. I have only painted, ummmm let me count, 12 samples over the past 4 months on the wall to figure it out. Don’t worry, your not the only one that can’t decide.

  8. Please don’t stop painting! You’re home is so inspiring! I can’t wait to see you’re living room when you’re done with that stencil.

and can you please show us your sewing room already? okay, I’m not demanding, just can’t wait!

  9. GO FOR IT! you have totally given me the courage to paint trees in my daughter’s room, and when my 2 year old saw me drawing them on her walls he insisted on me doing that in his room too. So he’s getting a blue tree on one of his walls. And I would love a whole wall of mirrors, if only my husband would let me. I think I’m a mirror addict…back in August I bought 3 from the same place in one week.

  10. Hmmm..what if you just did a tone on tone. A solid grey with a shiny grey pattern stenciled on? And then you could just have your accent walls around and it not look too busy?
I had this same problem at my last house and tried very hard to make it not look so choppy. But when I moved out…I had to have some stuff painted over in neutral colors. I loved it when I was in it but other’s didn’t see it that way to buy.

  11. OOOh I agree with everyone else — go for it! =)

the pretty patterny painted walls are so gorgeous! wall number 1 with the owls and stripes…. oh my freaking gosh! in love!

  12. It’s only paint (and a lot of time) 🙂 It’s not like there’s no going back. I love everything you’ve done so far, but I have to admit that this might be the most extreme painting yet. I think once you start, you’ll know how far to go. 🙂
    good luck!

  13. Love your walls, Mandi! If you didn’t want to paint the entire room with the stencil (though it would fit right in!) you could make frames around the walls and just paint inside the frames. Or, did you ever see Shelley’s bathroom wall treatment at House of Smiths? Super chic! Good luck with whatever you choose! Can’t wait to see it. 🙂

  14. Hey, if you don’t like it, you can always paint over it! But the fact that you’re wanting to do a gray pattern with white, I think, makes it less busy. I say do it. Or even start with the largest, focal wall, and then when that’s done, decide if you want to keep going or not. That’s usually how I make my decisions. Can’t wait to see it!

  15. In the famous words of the Nike marketing team – Just Do It!!
Just so you know, I live vicariously through your painted walls as I rent and cannot paint my walls..
I can’t wait to see pics.

  16. I think the patterned walls are definitely your style, but if you’re hesitating, there’s probably a reason. I usually do that too when I haven’t yet got the full vision of what I’m trying to do. Even though you have a lot of different paint patterns, they probably aren’t visible from each other.

I’d consider the flow of rooms to help you decide. Which rooms are you going to see from this room you want to paint? Is what you’re trying to do too much for the area? Does it coordinate or contrast nicely with the rest of the visible space.

Pattern isn’t a bad thing, you just have to consider what’s around it as well as have some simpler areas to allow the eyes a resting spot.

Can’t wait to see what you do. You’re amazing.

  17. I have to agree with the others, tone on tone would be perfect so as not to distract the eyes from your pretties which should be the where the attention should be focused on. The background should inhance not distract!

  18. I don’t think it’s too much. But here’s the thing, it’s only paint. If it is too much, you can easily and relatively cheaply fix it.

The one thing I would suggest is that you make sure you have large art work hung strategically so that it breaks up the pattern and gives the eye somewhere to rest.

  19. I’m sitting here chanting “Do it, do it, do it!”

Besides, it’s only paint. If you aren’t happy with it, I’m sure you’ll come up with something brilliant.

  20. Do it!! I love your house – and would replicate every single thing you’ve done if it would work in this space I live, which it won’t, UNFORTUNATELY. But that white and black stripe? Awesome. My hubby would never let me do that. And the kids’ rooms? Incredible. And that stencil? Killer. So just go with it. Because you should take your advice. 🙂

  21. love a stencil..maybe consider a tone on tone so it’s not such a contrast, easier on the eye so to speak, or use a gloss for the stencil and it will be shiney…just a thought

  22. Just throwing an idea out there. If you’re worried about it being too crazy looking, if you use the same color paint, but paint the wall a flat or eggshell, then the stencil high gloss or probably even semi-gloss on flat paint, from a distance it’s just a solid wall, but then the stencil looks more like a texture rather than a contrasted wallpaper look. **I’ve only seen pictures, and never done it, but have wanted to try it out. Good luck!

  23. I love it. I say go for it — it’s only paint…and your valuable time…maybe a hand cramp or two… But did I say how much I love the idea?

  24. I think the gray lines with white will look fabulous! I {heart} all your walls and at this very moment want to start painting!

    LOve your BLoggity blog!

Ps Can you tell me the two colors of gray paint you used….the striped one and the one with the trees on it?? thank you much!

  25. Since you are worried about pattern overload and want to brighten the space… I would paint all the walls in the room a light-medium gray and then do the stencil in an almost white shade, or even better– a really pretty complimentary pale slate blue or something. The lines being the darker color COULD turn out well (you never know until you try!), but I’d be nervous about that. I’d go lines lighter. Good luck, can’t wait to see how it turns out!!

  26. I can’t get your picture out of my head, the one with the red desk and blue frames. I am about to start working on my niece’s bedroom and I want to use it for inspiration. I just went thru ALL of the blogs I follow and of course you are at the bottom of the list because you start with a V, but at least I found you! I LOOOOVVVVVEEEEE that wall!

  27. Come on, go with your gut! You can do it and you know that it is going to look amazing. Stop second guessing your self! This isn’t the confidant woman that I blog stalk!! 🙂

Since the patterns are all in different rooms, go a head with it! If it doesn’t look good you can paint over it again. I will volunteer to come help!

    I triple dog dare you!
